Memory Foam Mattresses for Bad Backs

The first decision that must be made regarding a memory foam product is whether to go with a full mattress or just a mattress topper.

A full memory foam mattress is the ideal first choice, and only a full memory foam mattress will provide all of the benefits of memory foam. A good memory foam mattress has between two and three layers of foam of various densities that are designed to work with each other, these layers of high density foam provide the perfect balance of support and body-conforming softness.

Toppers are an affordable alternative to a full memory foam mattress.
An important issue to keep in mind regarding memory foam toppers is that they are only as good as the foundation they’re resting on. If you have an old mattress which  sags, dents or has other wear and tear, often this will also cause your memory foam topper to sag as well. In such cases an investment in a new memory foam mattress is the smarter alternative.

Density is one of the most important characteristics of memory foam, and it has a direct correlation to price. The density of memory foam is measured in pounds per cubic foot and relates to the memory foam’s ability to spring back to its original shape and not the firmness of the mattress.

The choice of thickness of your topper is equally as important as choosing the correct density, and the two are closely related. If you prefer a firm sleep surface, and you typically sleep on your stomach, you should go with a two inch, high density topper.

For side and back sleepers, or for those who sleep in a variety of positions, a three inch topper is usually the best way to go. As a general rule, the higher the density, the thinner the pad can be while still providing proper support.

Memory foam mattresses and memory foam toppers soften in response to body heat. This temperature sensitivity allows your body to gradually sink into it the mattress, thus creating a reduction in air circulation around your body making your mattress feel warmer. Many memory foam mattress users find this helpful in winter, also because you cannot use an electric under blanket with memory foam.

If you’re allergic to dust mites (bed bugs), buy a mattress with a washable cover, Foam covering companies will not provide a cover and tell you that this is the best option as they are able to offer the topper or mattress a cheaper price, unfortunately from experience I would recommend buying a memory foam  mattress or topper which includes a washable cover. This will protect your purchase in case of spillages, etc.

Memory Foam Mattresses, relatively new in the bedding market, became commercially available around 1991; before this they were mainly restricted to hospitals and and sales as sports equipment. A memory foam mattress is composed of visco-elastic polyurethan foam, and is often known as memory foam since it possesses specific properties. The main one of these is that it is known to mold to the human body and be much more flexible in giving support.

Originally a memory foam mattress was advertised as an advisable purchase for anyone with orthopedic problems, as it takes pressure off of bones, but nowadays it has become slightly cheaper to produce and so has developed more mass market appeal.

It is still one of the more pricey options for bedding, but memory foam toppers are also available for regular mattresses, which are a good purchase if you do not feel you can afford a full memory foam mattress when it comes to getting a new bed. The toppers are obviously a lot thinner though, and as a result can wear out a lot quicker as the top layers become suppressed due to constant weight, then there is not as much left underneath to support it.

The mattress is much more easier to install than the topper is. When a person is simply lying on a mattress, they are giving off enough heat to warm the top layer under them. This heat makes the mattress more durable and so it will mold to their body shape.

The remainder of the lower mattress remains supportive as it retains a cooler temperature. When the sleeper gets up, his mattress goes right back the way it was. The versatile nature of the foam makes is extremely comfortable and will allow for you to naturally sleep and move around.

The support it offers means that it holds any position you are in, since your spine is precisely aligned (as opposed to a regular sprung mattress, which can be quite firm) It will alleviate the aches and pains brought on by sleeping in uncomfortable positions.

Memory foam mattress’ are fantastic for people with allergies connected with dust mites because the mites cannot live in the foam. As long as the dead skin cells to feed on is supplied to them regularly, it can, definitely, still harbor them.

Somewhere in between the cushy world of soft mattresses and the back support aid of hard mattresses lies memory foam mattresses. They are normally a bit more expensive than your standard mattress, but they last a fair bit longer as well, so it is a sound investment.

Selecting the correct individual mattress is certainly a daunting task since there are several things to think about like brand, cost, and size. A four inch think memory foam mattress is ideal for function and comfort.
